“The moment when one thing turns into another is the most beautiful moment,” according to Brazilian artist Vik Muniz. That belief in the significance of transformation is at the heart of Waste Land, an uplifting documentary featuring both startling beauty and utter poverty. Director Lucy Walker follows Muniz into the world’s largest garbage dump in Brazil, where the artist works with local garbage pickers to craft and photograph elaborate self-portraits within the refuse. Beyond transforming the surface of their surroundings, the pickers begin to imagine new possibilities for their own lives.
“One of the powers of great portraiture is its ability to make us wonder about the complete strangers captured within enigmatic works of art. Vik Muniz’s recent series does that.” –Variety
